International Driving Permit

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a translation of your Australian driver licence photo card that allows you to drive in a foreign country.

The easiest and quickest way to apply for an IDP is online. Plan ahead and apply early to ensure your IDP arrives in time.

The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) is the only authorised distributer of IDPs for Australian driver licence holders. As their sales agent, we can process your application on their behalf.

While 98% of countries recognise IDPs, it’s good to check if the country you’re visiting requires one before you travel.

Apply online

AUD $51 plus postage charges The online application process is quick and easy. Once complete your IDP will be posted to you (processing and delivery timeframes apply).

Apply in person

AUD $51 in store If you’re travelling within 5 business days, visit a retail store in person to get your permit instantly. You cannot apply for an IDP on behalf of someone else.

Recent photo of yourself
A passport-sized colour photo of yourself with a plain white background. Check your photo meets the AAA requirements.

Australian driver licence
A current Australian driver licence plastic photo card (digital or temporary licences are not accepted).

Visa or Mastercard
A payment of AUD $51 (plus postage). You can pay by Visa or Mastercard.

Who can legally sell or distribute IDPs in Australia?

The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) is the only official distributor of IDPs in Australia. We’re authorised by them to sell on their behalf.

You can avoid buying fraudulent permits or licences by only applying with AAA or the motoring club in your state or territory.

Why do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

If you're planning on travelling overseas, a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) is an official United Nations and Government document that shows local authorities that you’re licenced to drive in Australia. Local authorities and car companies may require you hold an IDP to drive or rent a vehicle.

How can I apply for an International Driving Permit or IDP online?

Applying for an IDP online is quick and easy. It costs AUD $51 (plus postage charges) and all you need to complete the application process is your Australian Driver’s Licence photo card and a recent passport-sized photo.

Can I take the photo myself for online and in store applications?

Yes, you can take the photo yourself, a professional photo is not required to apply for an IDP, so long as it meets the following requirements:

How long does it take from an IDP to arrive?

If you apply online, your hardcopy IDP booklet will be dispatched within 3 business days once approved.

To estimate postage timeframes based on your location you can check Australia Post domestic delivery timeframes – you'll need to allow more time for public holidays and regional or international delivery. If you apply in person at a branch, your IDP can be issued on the spot if you have the required documentation.

Do International Driving Permits expire?

A permit is valid for 12 months from the date of issue or the expiry date of your Australian driver licence. If your licence expires during the permit period, simply renew your licence and the permit will stay valid.

Can I get an IDP while abroad or travelling overseas?

Yes. You can apply online and use international express post or direct courier to deliver your IDP to an overseas address.

Can I apply for an IDP on behalf of someone else?

No. A third party cannont apply for an IDP on behalf of someone else.
